‘Johnson government snub is highly offensive’ – O’Neill
It is highly offensive that the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has failed to engage with the Irish Government since coming into office, Leas Uachtarán Shinn Féin Michelle O’Neill has said.
Commenting after leading a Sinn Féin delegation to meet with new British Secretary of State in Stormont today, she said:
“Firstly, we raised with Julian Smith the failure of Boris Johnson to even speak to An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar. That is highly offensive given the disastrous impact of Brexit on the island of Ireland.
“We told him that the people here voted to Remain and their wishes should be respected not trampled over.
“We also made it clear that talks to date have failed to face up to the core issues at the heart of the political impasse here.
“It is unacceptable that we are still without a power-sharing government and this British Government has been complicit in that through its repeated failure to implement agreements or to confront a denial of rights to citizens here that it would never tolerate in its own country.”
