Gildernew meets permanent secretary to outline fracking opposition

1 August, 2019 - by Michelle Gildernew

Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has reiterated Sinn Féin’s total opposition to fracking anywhere on the island of Ireland.

The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP commented:

"I met with the Permanent Secretary of the Department of the Economy yesterday alongside Sinn Féin colleagues from Fermanagh South Tyrone to express our total opposition to any plans to carry out fracking in the area.

"This is an area known for its natural beauty and that cannot be put in jeopardy by large companies who wish to exploit our national resources through fracking or petroleum exploration.

"Agriculture and tourism are a large part of the economy in this area and there is a serious concern that jobs would be put at risk in those sectors if fracking were allowed to go ahead.

"A public consultation has just been held and we made our submissions to it and now await its conclusions.

"We made it clear that Sinn Féin is completely opposed to fracking anywhere on the island of Ireland.”
