‘All Ireland voices must be heard on Climate Youth Parliament’ - Ó Donnghaile

2 August, 2019 - by Niall Ó Donnghaile

Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has written to the Seán Ó Fearghaíl Cheann Comhairle of Dail Eireann expressing disappointment that youth organisations from the north are unable to take part in the planned Youth Parliament on Climate in partnership between Dail Eireann and RTÉ.

Niall Ó Donnghaile said:

“I have been contacted by a number of youth organisations in the north expressing deep disappointment that they will be unable to take part in the upcoming Youth Parliament on Climate.

“The environment and climate devastation knows no borders; young people across the whole of Ireland are energised, mobilised, concerned and organising on this critical issue.

“Legislators should not be erecting further barriers to activism and participation on an issue that affects us all, therefore I am urging RTÉ and the Oireachtas to rethink this decision.

“It’s ironic that RTÉ’s new story on the Youth Parliament references the First Dáil -  an all Ireland Parliament which was representative of citizens the length and breadth of Ireland.

“Youth organisations and others must make their voices heard, loud and clear, in opposition to this decision to ensure it is overturned immediately.”
