Government must engage with IMO to avert consultant strike action - Louise O'Reilly TD

2 August, 2019 - by Louise O'Reilly TD

Speaking this evening as the Irish Medical Organisation announced the possibility of balloting consultants for strike action, Sinn Féin health spokesperson, Louise O’Reilly TD said such a step highlights how bad things are for patients and staff in the health service and the need for government to engage.

Teachta O’Reilly said:

“The possibility that the Irish Medical Organisation (IMO) could ballot consultants for strike action highlights how bad things are for patients and staff in the health service.

“What is needed now is immediate government engagement. Only by all parties sitting down at the table can a strike be averted.

“There is justifiable anger amongst consultants with over 500 vacant consultant posts around the country, increasing waiting lists, causing distress for patients, and adding significant pressure on those working in the health service.

“Many commitments were given by this government to address the consultant recruitment and retention crisis, and those commitments should be honoured, such as equal pay for equal work for newer entrant consultants.

“The recruitment and retention crisis created by this and previous governments is crippling our health service. It will not be solved until there are face-to-face talks with doctors representatives.

“Industrial action is avoidable but the Minster for Health and this government will have to be proactive to resolve this situation.”
