Mitchel McLaughlin expresses concern about the future of Education Action Zones

10 November, 2005

Sinn Féin MLA, Mitchel McLaughlin said that it appeared that the proposed Education Action Zones announced in a blaze of publicity by the British Direct Rule Education Minister has now been stealthily withdrawn as part of the Education cuts.

Mr McLaughlin said "Sinn Féin as a Party and I personally have lobbied to have a number of areas in Derry covered by the Education Action Zones. It is our belief that there are many young people in the district who could benefit from the development of Education Action Zones.

"It is particularly important to understand that our young people need to develop their education and life skills if they are to ensure gainful employment. Currently too many young people are unable to access employment opportunities and the impact of this leads to a cycle of poverty and deprivation."

Mr McLaughlin concluded "I am writing to the Minister for clarification on the position of the proposed Education Action Zones. I want to ensure that funding is available to be targeted at those young people most in need of additional help and support."
