Gildernew welcomes all-Ireland ambulance cooperation
Sinn Féin MP Michelle Gildernew has welcomed all-Ireland cooperation to provide ambulance cover during staff shortages.
The Fermanagh South Tyrone MP said:
“The staff shortage in the Ambulance Service is causing serious concerns about ambulance cover, particularly in rural areas.
“As a result of these shortages I contacted the Ambulance Service this week and proposed they ask their counterparts in the South for assistance to ensure that emergency ambulance cover is available.
“I’m glad this suggestion has now been taken up and that an agreement has been reached which will see ambulance crews from the south providing additional cover.
“This is a sensible step and will be welcomed, particularly in areas close to the border.
“While this move is a short term solution, a longer term solution must be found so that adequate cover is available and all-Ireland cooperation should be among the options considered.”
