Retrofit scheme suspension ‘an insult to hundreds of homeowners’ – Denise Mitchell TD

14 August, 2019 - by Denise Mitchell TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson for Dublin Denise Mitchell TD has said that the Government’s decision to pull funding for the home retrofit scheme is not only “astonishing”, but also “is a slap in the face to homeowners who wanted to do the responsible thing, to retrofit their homes to be more energy efficient.”

The Dublin Bay North TD said:

“It is astonishing that the Government has decided to suspend funding for the retrofit grants scheme under the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI).

“More than 300 homeowners have been waiting on approval for the grant, some for months, only to be told now that they will not be receiving funding.

“Not only is this a key part of the Government’s Climate Action Plan being thrown to the side, this is a slap in the face to homeowners who wanted to do the responsible thing, to retrofit their homes to be more energy efficient.

“Some owners are already mid-build and have sunk thousands into their projects, only to be left in the lurch by this Government.

“Last week, we learned that the proposed scrappage scheme to boost the use of electric cars was a non-runner and now the retrofit scheme.

“This Government is paying lip service to climate change and they are playing the Irish taxpayer for a fool in the process.”
