748 children waiting over 6 months for mental health care - Pat Buckley TD
Sinn Féin Mental Health Spokesperson Pat Buckley TD has condemned as dangerous and unacceptable recent figures from the HSE which reveal 2,440 children are currently waiting for mental health care across the state with 748 of those waiting more than half a year for an appointment.
Deputy Buckley said;
“This is simply the latest revelation which shows that our mental health services are desperately failing young people.
"In total 2440 children are waiting for appointments with more than half of those waiting at the very least 12 weeks to be seen. These are vulnerable adolescents and children with real mental health issues whose lives may hang in the balance.
"With mental health treatment, every day counts and that is even more true for young people where early intervention has been proven to have great success.
"748 children have been waiting periods in excess of 6 months with 100 of those waiting more than a year and a half.
"We need immediate investment in Child and Adolescent Mental Health. We need to end all caps on overtime and recruitment and ensure all units have adequate staff to cover services throughout the year.”
