Once again Independent Newspapers get the story completely wrong

11 November, 2005

Sinn Féin Vice President Pat Doherty MP has accused the Evening Herald of once again getting the story completely wrong as they printed a totally false headline in this evening's newspaper.

Mr. Doherty said:

"In a front page story in the Evening Herald today they publish a story, accusing Sinn Féin of being behind race attacks in Ballinamore in County Leitrim. This is entirely untrue. No member of Sinn Féin was involved in the incident which took place at the weekend and no member of the party has been questioned by the Gardaí.

"The Evening Herald has once again printed absolute nonsense as fact. It is appalling that any newspaper feels that they can report such lies as fact, particularly in the aftermath of the coverage of the death of Liam Lawlor when the Independent Group of Newspapers spoke of the need for the highest standards of professionalism.

"We intend to raise this matter with the Managing Editor of Independent Newspapers and the National Union of Journalists. We have also handed the matter over to the party's solicitors." ENDS
