RTÉ should review competition stance - Ó Donnghaile
Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has written to RTÉ’s Director General encouraging the organisation to review its bar on Six County viewers from entering the broadcaster’s competitions.
Speaking today Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said:
“RTÉ’s current policy of competitions being open to viewers and listeners in the south is unsustainable; it has also caused deep upset and frustration, not least when viewers in the north were prohibited from entering to win ‘All-Ireland’ tickets.
“I have written to RTÉ’s Director General urging the broadcaster to reflect on this policy and review it with the intention of ensuring RTÉ’s competitions are open to all.
“That would then bring them in line with their own Charter which seeks to reflect and engage with the whole island.
“This is resolvable if there is a will to do so. I would encourage RTÉ to heed the calls from right across Ireland on this issue and to appreciate and understand the deep offence decisions like this one cause their audiences.
“I hope RTÉ reflect on the weekend's debacle and work to ensure their Charter commitments are fulfilled and that audience across the entirety of Ireland can take part in their highly sought-after competitions.”
