Destruction of the Amazon illustrates the serious pitfalls of the EU-Mercusor deal - Matt Carthy MEP
Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has said today that the ongoing destruction and deforestation of the Amazon rainforest, illustrated by the ongoing practice of deliberately burning the Amazon for cattle ranching, highlights the serious pitfalls at the heart of the EU-Mercosur trade deal.
"Sinn Féin have been steadfast in stating that the Mercosur trade deal represents a sell-out of Irish farmers and their families, and is devastating news for our rural economy.
"The Mercosur deal also flies in the face of EU commitments to tackle Climate Change and that is no more obvious than when we see the ongoing practice of deliberately destroying the Amazon for cattle ranching; a policy supported by the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
"This is a policy that will continue - and worsen - if the Mercosur deal is approved.
"The Dáil recently declared a climate emergency, and yet we are now facing the prospect of a trade deal that will significantly damage Irish agriculture and the environment.
"The government needs to state categorically that it opposes the Mercosur deal, work towards its rejection, and in respect of the ongoing destruction of the Amazon it should call in the Brazilian Ambassador to Ireland and put on record our utter disgust at the practice of burning and illegal logging supported by the Brazilian President."
