'Department assurances meaningless without detail' – Gildernew
Sinn Féin MLA Colm Gildernew has said departmental assurances on Brexit preparations are meaningless without a clear plan.
Speaking after meeting Executive Office officials today, the Fermanagh/South Tyrone MLA commented:
“After meeting with Executive Office officials today, we are still no clearer as to what plans are in place to ensure health services aren't severely impacted by Brexit.
“I asked a number of health specific questions during the meeting but as there were no representatives from the health department present, no substantive answers were provided.
“But the reality is that we have been putting these questions to the department for over a year and a half with no detail forthcoming.
“The Department of Health are content to pass the buck to the Executive Office and continuously defer to assurances from London.
“I have consistently pushed the department on the impact of Brexit on the stockpiling of medicines; the provision of medical devices and the availability of radioactive isotopes for cancer treatments.
“To date, assurances from the Department have been meaningless and void of any detail which causes grave concern for both patients and medical professionals.
“I have written again to the Department of Health with a list of specific questions that need to be addressed as we approach October 31st and a possible crash Brexit.”
