Creed must intervene as beef protests reach turning point - Matt Carthy MEP
Commenting on the arrest of a man during a protest at a meat processing plant in Ballyjamesduff , Co. Cavan on Monday, Sinn Féin MEP for Midlands Northwest Matt Carthy has said the incident is a ‘turning point’ and called for the direct intervention of the Minister for Agriculture to force processors to engage in meaningful discussions that can lead to a resolution of the dispute with farmers.
Matt Carthy said:
"The incident in Ballyjamesduff is s an extremely serious development. It is a turning point in this dispute - a turning point which can expedite a resolution or which can see a further escalation of the situation.
“It is now up to the Minister for Agriculture, Michael Creed to ensure the latter by instructing the processors to engage constructively and meaningfully with farmers immediately.
“The Minister must also demand that the industry halt their unhelpful and provocative legal actions against protesting farmers."
