Murphy to meet Irish American leaders on need to protect Good Friday Agreement
Sinn Féin MLA Conor Murphy will meet with members of Congress and Irish American leaders in the United States to stress the importance of protecting the Good Friday Agreement from the ongoing chaos of Brexit.
The Sinn Féin Chief Negotiator said:
"I will be meeting with senior American political leaders in Washington and Irish American leaders in New York to update them on Brexit, the ongoing need to protect peace and progress in Ireland and the increasing demand for an Irish Unity Referendum.
"Irish America and American political leaders have played a crucial role in securing the Good Friday Agreement and peace and progress.
“The continuing chaos of Brexit is a threat to the progress that all Ireland has enjoyed.
“We welcome the commitment of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, and Congressman Richie Neal, the Chair of the Ways and Means Committee, that the US will not agree to a trade deal with Britain post-Brexit if the Good Friday Agreement is undermined.
“This commitment is shared by members across both houses.
“I will address a meeting of the Congressional Friends of Ireland on Capitol Hill in Washington and Irish political leaders in New York on the need to ensure that the British government honour their obligations to protect the agreements and safeguard progress.”
