Ó Donnghaile welcomes lifting of blood donation ban
Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has welcomed news that the Irish Blood Transfusion Service (IBTS) have lifted the ban on people who were resident in the North during the vCJD crisis donating blood in the South.
Ó Donnghaile has raised the issue in the Seanad where government announced a review of the ban last year.
Speaking today Seanadóir Ó Donnghaile said;
“There is no doubt that in order to protect the blood supply, the government and IBTS had to adhere to the strictest of scientific guidelines when assessing this matter; but given the passage of time since the vCJD crisis and the demonstrable need for additional blood donations, this issue warranted a reassessment.
"I welcome news that the board of the IBTS have subsequently decided to lift this ban.
"Sinn Féin encourage people to consider becoming donors and this decision will open doors to many people who have been keen to donate and help save lives but were unable to due to this now ended ban.
“That is indeed very welcome for healthcare across Ireland.”
