Anderson welcomes EU commitment to backstop
Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has welcomed the EU's restatement of its commitment that there cannot be a Brexit deal without the Irish backstop.
"I welcome the EU's commitment in stating once again that the Withdrawal Agreement must contain the Irish backstop.
"Sinn Féin made sure that the EU recognised the unique circumstances of the north of Ireland and mandated EU negotiators to protect the Good Friday Agreement and ensured there would be no hardening of the border.
"The backstop was initially designed for the north in order to provide protections and those baseline protections must be maintained.
"A resolution will now go forward to the European Parliament allowing for a north of Ireland backstop but the important thing is that the protections in the backstop are maintained and the EU have made it clear it is standing fully behind the backstop.
"The European Parliament resolution also reiterates the right contained in the Good Friday Agreement for people in the north to be Irish citizens and to have their say on their constitutional future through a referendum on Irish unity.
"The Brexiteers in the Tories and DUP need to get real and realise there cannot be a deal without the backstop."
