Brexit Budget cannot be used as an excuse for failing to deliver on people’s priorities - Pearse Doherty TD
Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has warned that the threat posed by Brexit cannot be used as an excuse for Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil to avoid dealing with challenges facing Irish people in the upcoming budget. Deputy Doherty has also called for the immediate establishment of a €2 billion Brexit Stabilisation Fund to support affected business and communities.
Speaking today, Teachta Doherty said:
“Brexit is a challenge for the Irish economy and the public finances. But the Government and Fianna Fáil cannot use Brexit as an excuse for failure. The public finances can be managed sustainably while delivering for the people.
“The Government and Fianna Fáil have failed to prepare communities and businesses adequately for imminent Brexit disruption. Last week, the Minister for Finance informed me that the majority of small business have still not registered to trade with Britain in the event of a No Deal Brexit, with over 2,000 companies with high levels of trade with the UK still unregistered.
"This is disturbing information that unless acted upon would spell disaster for small and large businesses across the State.
“We are calling for the establishment of a Brexit Stabilisation Fund of €2 billion, deal or no deal, which could be drawn down over the coming years. This would support affected businesses, boost employment in affected communities and increase capital investment in regions most exposed to the fallout from Brexit.
"At present no such fund exists, and significant provisions should be made to deal with market disruption that will last years, not months.
“Given the uncertainty ahead of us, it is important that the public finances are in a good position to weather any future disruption. But it is also essential that the challenges we face domestically are addressed in the upcoming Budget.
"Rip-off rents, high childcare costs, pressures in our health service and extortionate insurance premiums are all problems that can be readily solved with political will and the right policies.
“There should not be a choice between prudence and delivery. This Government have failed on both counts.
“Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil cannot use Brexit as an excuse for failure."
