Solution to beef crisis lies in increased base price – Mary Lou McDonald TD
Sinn Féin President Mary Lou McDonald TD has challenged An Taoiseach to find solutions to the current beef crisis which has seen farmers take to the picket lines over the last number of weeks.
Speaking in the Dáil today, she said:
“There is a solution to the current crisis. The way to bring this dispute to an end is for the highly profitable meat factories to agree a base price increase with farmers.
“Farmers don’t want to be out on picket lines. They want to be back on their farms doing what they do best. The factory workers want to be back at their jobs earning a living. This won’t happen unless the principle of fair play is brought to bear.
“The Minister for agriculture must now convene a fresh round of talks at which farmers organisations and the processors can discuss a fair increase – an increase that will lift the extreme pressure off farmers.
“Supports for those workers who have been laid off also need to be put in place without delay.
“These common-sense solutions are the way forward. Threats, Facebook posts and playing party politics will solve nothing.”
