Martin Kenny slams comments from independent TDs
Sinn Féin’s justice spokesman, Martin Kenny TD, has slammed the remarks of Independent TD, Michael Collins. Deputy Collins, was speaking on local radio in his Cork constituency when he defended the controversial remarks of another independent, Noel Grealish TD, at a meeting to oppose a direct provision facility in Co Galway.
Deputy Kenny said:
“I totally condemn this kind of attack on unfortunate people who are coming to Ireland as asylum seekers. God knows we Irish went to the ends of the earth when we could not live here, in our own bad times.
“It is terrible reflection on these public representatives that they should make such sweeping and untrue statements about people who are fleeing war in Syria or escaping Islamic insurgency in North Africa.
“No doubt, the Department of Justice should let communities know their plans for specific buildings or other facilities in their midst, above all to dispel the myths about the people who may be coming to live there amongst them in the near future.
“Happily, we can point to many examples, all over the country, where communities have welcomed those living in direct provision or other newcomers to their areas without these kind of attitudes coming to the fore.”
