Brady calls for immediate release of Abdullah Ocalan

24 September, 2019 - by Mickey Brady

Sinn Féin MP Mickey Brady has called for the immediate release of imprisoned Kurdish political leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Speaking at an event on the Kurdish peace process at the British Labour Party fringe, the Newry and Armagh MP said:

"Kurdish political leader Abdullah Ocalan has been unjustly imprisoned for 20 years.

“During much of that time he was held in solitary confinement as the sole prisoner on a prison island and denied access to visits from his family and legal representatives.

"At the fringe of the British Labour Party conference in Brighton today I spoke alongside Kurdish activists and members of the British House of Lords who have called for the immediate release of Abdullah Ocalan.

"Human rights organisations and campaigners from across the world have bene vocal in calling on the Turkish authorities to end their oppression of the Kurdish people and the ongoing repression of Kurdish elected representatives.

"The international community needs to raise its voice, challenge Turkey and demand an immediate end to the isolation of Abdullah Ocalan and release him in order to support the development of the peace process in the region."
