Parachute regiment flags at Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre blatant display of sectarianism - McGuigan

24 September, 2019 - by Philip McGuigan

Sinn Féin MLA Philip McGuigan has called for the removal of parachute regiment flags from the entrance to the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre.

The North Antrim MLA said:

“The two parachute regiment flags at the entrance to the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre need to be removed immediately, they are a deliberate attempt at marking out territory and intimidating people from a nationalist or republican background who may use the Leisure Centre.

“All the other flags on the Garryduff Road have been removed and in my view the fact that the two parachute regiment flags, one on each side of the Leisure Centre entrance, have been kept up is a blatant display of sectarianism.

"There is a clear attempt to intimidate nationalist and republican ratepayers from using the Joey Dunlop Leisure centre in Ballymoney which should be a shared space, where people from all communities feel welcome and comfortable.”
