Brian Stanley TD calls for all parties to support Sinn Féin’s rural Ireland amendment in the Dáil this evening
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Agriculture and Rural Development Brian Stanley TD has called for all parties to support Sinn Féin’s amendment to the Rural Independent Group’s Agri-food motion in the Dáil this evening.
The amendment calls upon the Government to introduce a beef market price index to provide the sector with much greater transparency.
Speaking in advance of this evening’s debate, Deputy Stanley said:
“While we now have an agreement within the beef sector between farmers and processors, much work remains to be done.
“A major issue which remains in the sector is a complete lack of trust between the processors and the farmers.
“Our amendment is an attempt to provide a solution to that problem by providing much greater transparency.
“Right now, a small group of powerful cartel-like processors taking advantage of a system in which farmers are denied basic information.
“Our amendment calls on the Government to establish a beef market observatory which would require processors to publish to the Department daily price reports.
“If established, it would go some way to ending the high levels of mistrust that exists between farmers and factories.
“There are some issues like price that the Dáil can't legislate for.
“However, what we do is provide legislation and technical support which can underpin the deal which has been agreed by the sectors stakeholders.
“We understand that this beef price index is not a silver bullet, but it would go some way to ending any suggested manipulation of prices by processors.
“I am calling on all parties to support the amendment”.
