‘Election an opportunity to reject reckless DUP/Tory Brexit’ – O’Neill
The pending Westminster election is an opportunity to reject the reckless DUP/Tory Brexit, Sinn Féin Leas Uachtarán Michelle O’Neill has told party activists in West Belfast.
Michelle O’Neill was addressing local party members following the selection of sitting MP Paul Maskey to contest the poll for Sinn Féin in West Belfast.
Michelle O'Neill said:
“In the last British General Election there was a clear and resounding rejection of Westminster by the nationalist electorate in the North as they returned seven strong Sinn Féin MPs.
“In the coming weeks, the people of the North will again have an opportunity to turn their backs on Westminster and to reject the toxic and reckless DUP/Tory Brexit which threatens our peace process, All-Ireland economy and rights as European and Irish citizens.
“Sinn Féin is fully prepared and ready to contest this election. We will bring our anti-Brexit and pro-Irish unity message to each and every door in West Belfast and across the North.
“Paul Maskey has done outstanding work as MP for West Belfast in protecting and advancing the interests of its citizens – I am delighted that he will again stand for Sinn Féin in the upcoming election.”
Selected candidate and sitting West Belfast MP Paul Maskey added:
“This election is an opportunity to maximise opposition to Brexit and the disaster it will inflict on the island of Ireland.
“Sinn Féin is the anti-Brexit, pro-remain party that has defended the democratic wishes of the people of the North. We have raised this with all the parties in Westminster, Europe, Dublin and around the world.
“If elected again, I will remain a proud abstentionist Sinn Féin MP. The chaos within Westminster and the British Government over the course of the last three years clearly illustrates that Ireland’s interests will not be severed in London.
“In the event of a crash-out Brexit, Irish unity remains the only practical solution.”
