Gap in cost of childcare highlights the failure of the Government’s reliance on the private market – Denise Mitchell TD
Sinn Féin TD for Dublin Bay North and member of the Children and Youth Affairs Committee Denise Mitchell has said that the Government’s reliance on the private market to provide childcare and their devotion to the status quo is putting undue pressure on parents, who are then forced to choose between work and minding their children.
Teachta Mitchell said:
“Parents are being forced to choose between work and minding their children. That is not a decision that should be forced upon anyone. It should always be a choice that is made freely. The private market has swallowed up every allowance that has been made towards helping parents pay and childcare workers are still among the lowest paid in the state.
“Childcare costs are too high across the board, but the disparity between Dublin and elsewhere is astonishing. To see a difference of as much as 70% only lends more credence to the fact that the system that this Government has allowed to flourish is fundamentally broken.
“Sinn Féin have always stood with childcare workers and working families. Minister Zappone has said that her ability to implement change in the area is ‘limited’. This is only the case if you are interested in preserving the status quo.”
