DUP lacking courage to step into world of real politics

24 November, 2005

Speaking today as the two governments continued their discussions with the parties at Hillsborough, Sinn Féin General Secretary Mitchel McLaughlin said that DUP are 'propping up the Direct Rule administration because they lack the and courage to step into the world of real and responsible politics'.

Mr McLaughlin said:

" Last week we heard the DUP complain bitterly about the handling of the budget by Direct Rule Ministers. This week they are criticising the local government proposals from Direct Rule Ministers. But all of their complaints and criticisms ring hollow when the DUP could stop the unaccountable government of Direct Rule ministers.

" Locally elected ministers, accountable to the assembly, should decide all of these issues. Only the DUP is preventing this happening. The DUP are enabling bad government and propping up direct rule because they lack the confidence and courage to step into the world of real and responsible politics." ENDS
