Long Kesh Stadium is part of a wider development project

16 November, 2005

The Vice-Chairperson of the Maze Long Kesh Monitoring Group, Lisburn councillor Paul Butler has said that the development of the Sports Stadium at the Long Kesh site is only part of the wider development plans for the site that includes the development of the International Centre for Conflict Transformation as well as a substantial industrial zone.

Cllr Butler said:

"No one should under any illusions. The development of the Sports Stadium is only one part of the development of Long Kesh. The development plans for the site includes the development of the International Centre for Conflict Transformation including the H-Blocks, the prison hospital where the hunger strikers died as well as a substantial industrial zone.

"It makes sense for this major development to be located at this site.

"However, Sinn Féin have very serious concerns about the failure of the Maze Long Kesh Monitoring Group to meet as a result of the UUP refusal to nominate to the body. Sinn Féin have raised these concerns with Jeff Rooker and urged him to hold a meeting of the group at the earliest opportunity.

"It is this delay I believe that is creating the space for those with different agendas to challenge the development of the Long Kesh site." ENDS
