Bairbre de Brún addresses European Parliament on climate change

16 November, 2005

Sinn Féin MEP Bairbre de Brún has today spoken in a debate in the European Parliament on the issue of global climate change. She said that setting more ambitious targets requires 'a commitment to alter the way in which energy is generated and to change our collective lifestyles'.

Ms de Brún was contributing to a debate on an EU Parliament Report by Anders Wijkman MEP entitled 'Beating global climate change'

The European Council and Commission contributed to the joint debate with statements on climate change in light of the damage caused by recent hurricanes and the outcome of the EU/China and EU/India summits.

Speaking from Strasbourg Ms de Brún said:

"Climate change remains one of the biggest challenges facing us as a global community. The EU has a crucially important role to play in bringing about progressive responses to combating climate change.

"Anders Wijkman's report makes clear that 'living up to the Kyoto requirements is the first priority for the EU'. Whilst the Kyoto protocol is just a small step in combating climate change we must throw our support behind it, and urge those who have not signed up to do so immediately.

"I welcome the fact that the Council and Commission have stressed the importance of the next phase. The big challenge is to set ambitious targets for the period post 2012 and to get all major world actors involved. It will be important to decide on a formal mandate for negotiating new commitments in Montreal and precise deadlines for reaching agreement.

"Níl ach deis bheag fágtha againn dul i ngleic go héifeachtach leis an athrú aeráide - agus beidh an deis sin ag cúlú uainn go gairid. Agus spriocanna níos ardaidhmeannaí á leagadh síos, caithfear fíorghealltanas a bheith ann; beidh athruithe móra ag teastáil sa chóras déantúsaíochta, sa chóras taistil, sa chóras ina ghinntear an fuinneamh agus i gcóras maireachtála an daonra.

Tá ról tábhachtach lárnach ag an AE sa cheist seo agus freagraí leanúnacha á gcur chun cinn agus á gcur ar fáil aige, freagraí a bhaineann leis an athrú aeráide agus an dóigh is fearr le dul chun comhraic leis, freagraí as an nua a chuirfidh bealaí timpeallachta ar fáil a bhéas ina gcuspóir agus ina gcloch ghabhála do dhaoine eile.

"Setting more ambitious targets will require major changes to our transport systems and to the manufacturing process; a commitment to alter the way in which energy is generated and a change to our collective lifestyles. Many of the suggestions for creating a more environmentally friendly society are obvious. We need to invest in public transport systems that use clean fuel, to invest properly in actively promoting renewable energy and to move away from excessive consumption and towards a more sustainable development.

"The discussions regarding climate change must be matched with actions, ambitious targets and permanent monitoring systems. The future of our planet requires a long term plan and political commitment to implement that plan". ENDS
