DUP Leadership must tell their Education Board members to back Schools Bus Service
Sinn Féin Education Spokesperson Michael Ferguson has called upon the leadership of the DUP to support the reinstatement of School Transport in the Southern Education Board area; Michael Ferguson brought parents from schools in the area to meet the Education Minister. Parents reminded the Minister of her 'Section '75 Duties and asked her to also write to the SELB which she agreed to do.
However, the main problem lies with Unionist Members of the Board and in particular the DUP who opposed the cuts in the run up to local government elections in May but on return to the Board supported the ending of school transport to some of the most isolated and poorest of children and despite cross community support for the reintroduction of the service failed to support several motions brought before the Board.
This Thursday will allow the DUP another opportunity to support the reintroduction of the service.
Commenting upon the situation Michael Ferguson has called upon the DUP to publicly state their case for refusing to support School Transport. He said:
"Sinn Féin quite deliberately took a step back to allow the DUP space to propose the reintroduction of the rural transport following the mobilisation of schools across the school sectors in support of its reintroduction.
"The DUP however, have failed to live up to their election promises and need to either join the rest of us and bring back the school bus service or explain publicly why they are denying the entitlement to the most isolated and deprived children in these rural areas."ENDS
