Sinn Fein demand single all-Ireland financial regulation body

23 November, 2005

Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel McLaughlin has said that the decision of the Bank of Ireland to offer free banking to southern customers but not its northern customers highlights a huge area of concern.

Mr McLaughlin said:

"This case highlights serious problems in relation to the regulation of financial instructions that operate across the island.

"It is clear discrimination for the Bank of Ireland to operate one policy towards its southern customers and another in relation to people living in the north. There are also other areas and companies that operate differential policy depending on which side of the border people live. This is clearly wrong.

"Sinn Féin have urged Peter Hain to develop the logic of his position that the six counties is unsustainable in the long-term by bringing forward further all-Ireland bodies and areas of co-operation.

"This example only reinforces the demand for a single all-Ireland response to the issue of financial regulation of not just banks but coving areas such as insurance." ENDS
