Changes on punishing children do not go far enough

24 November, 2005

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Children, West Belfast MLA Sue Ramsey has said that the legislation announced today by the Children's Minister Jeff Rooker does not go far enough.

Ms Ramsey said:

"Sinn Féin have endorsed the 'Children are unbeatable' campaign without reservation.

"While many will welcome the introduction of this legislation as an important first step it is also true that it does not go far enough.

"Sinn Féin have no interest in legislation that brings us into line with Britain. We believe that our children and young people deserve legislation that outlaws physical punishment in its totality.

"Children deserve the same protections as adults under the law. Our legislation needs to met the UN Charter on the Protection of Children threshold." ENDS
