Statutory response to South Belfast flooding 'pathetic' - Alex Maskey
Sinn Féin MLA for South Belfast Alex Maskey has this afternoon slammed the response of senior officials from the various departments for their 'pathetic' response to this morning's floods in South Belfast, which saw a number of people evacuated from their homes.
Speaking this afternoon Mr Maskey said:
"I am very angry by the response of senior officials to this morning's flooding on the Lower Ormeau Road. It is my understanding that no senior officials were on site to help with the rescue or clean up operation, and this is wholly unacceptable.
"The Belfast City Council has now invoked its powers on emergency planning and is working with all relevant agencies to deal with the situation. I welcome the fact that the Council has declared the Lower Ormeau an area of emergency.
"A number of families had to be evacuated and now require emergency housing. I want to commend the emergency services for their swift and comprehensive response to this morning's events and call for a multi agency commitment that this will not be allowed to happen again". ENDS
