Victims of State violence demand the truth
Sinn Féin MLA for North Antrim Philip McGuigan and the party's spokesperson for Truth has today said that "the families of state violence deserve to be told the truth".
Mr McGuigan made his comments after the An Fhirinne group, which represents victims of state violence and those murdered as a result of collusion between the British state and unionist paramilitaries, held a press conference this morning to unveil details of a trip to the European Parliament next week (Wednesday 7th December).
The visit has been hosted by Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald aims to highlight the issue of collusion with MEPs and a number of human rights organisations.
Speaking after the press conference Mr McGuigan said:
"This morning's press conference by An Fhirinne brought together families whose loved ones were murdered as a result of state violence, collusion and the use of plastic bullets. The clear message from today‚s press conference was that the families deserve the truth. The British state remains in denial about its role in the murder and cover up of Irish citizens.
"Next week in Brussels, Sinn Féin MEP Mary Lou McDonald will host a delegation of families and facilitate meetings with MEPs and various NGOs with a particular interest in human rights matters.
"Many of the families feel that they have been ignored when victims of the conflict are discussed. Sinn Féin is very clear that there can be no hierarchy of victim hood. My hope is that next Wednesday‚s visit to the European Parliament will bring the families that first step towards closure and the truth of what happened to their loved ones." ENDS
