Waste crisis a direct result of Government failure - Reilly

10 January, 2006

Meath Sinn Féin councillor Joe Reilly has described Environment Minister Dick Roche’s proposals to build a network of incinerators to tackle the growing waste management crisis as “misguided.”

Speaking today Councillor Reilly said, “The Current waste crisis is a direct result of the Government’s failure to implement a strategy of reduction, reuse and recycle towards zero waste.

“Minister Roche’s proposals to build a network of incinerators to tackle this crisis are misguided and would be counter-productive. In order to make incineration economically viable we will be forced to produce even more waste to fill the incinerators’ capacity.

“The key to tackling this crisis lies in the promotion of a sustainable and environmentally friendly policy that is based on reducing the demand to produce and consume waste, reuse where appropriate and investment in our fledgling recycling industry. A strategy that goes to the source of our waste crisis rather than becoming dependent on landfill or incineration.” ENDS
