Gildernew welcomes publication of papers into social care

Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson Colm Gildernew MLA has welcomed the publication of the first in a series of papers by CPEA into reforming the north social care system.

The Fermanagh and South Tyrone MLA said:

“I welcome the publication of this safeguarding paper and the announcement by the Minister of Health that he intends to consult on a single Adult Safeguarding Bill.

“I had started the process of introducing a Private Members Bill on this issue and had written to the Minister of Health about it.

“It was clear from the Home Truths report and the scandal within Muckamore Abbey Hospital that the north’s adult safeguarding processes were failing to do as intended.

“I firmly believe that recent safeguarding failings cannot solely be blamed on the lack of a single amalgamated piece of safeguarding legislation.

“However, legislation that will provide additional clarity and sanctions will be a positive development.

“The Department of Health must commit to carrying out an inclusive and comprehensive consultation which accounts for the views of all.”

I have also requested an urgent meeting with the British Prime Minister.
