Sinn Féin Housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin TD has cautiously welcomed the commitment made by the Minister for Housing to setting up a departmental working group to examine solutions for homeowners impacted by latent defects due to bad building during the boom.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“I welcome that the Minister for Housing as reaffirmed the government’s commitment to examine the issue of defective housing.
“The commitment to create a working group within the Department of Housing is a small first step, which I cautiously welcome.
“However, this group must go about its work quickly and it must not be used to buy the Minister some time.
“This issue is not going away and homeowners living with latent defects have been waiting long enough for a resolution to be put forward.
“Sinn Féin would like to see a redress scheme established which will include; an information and advice service for homeowners, mediation services and/or legally binding adjudications on cases, and a compensation fund for homeowners that will be paid for by a levy on the construction industry and will be matched by the Exchequer.”
