McDowell must explain why prison officers are guarding Thornton Hall site

17 January, 2006

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Justice, Equality and Human Rights Aengus Ó Snodaigh TD has described as "absurd" the fact that there are prison officers guarding the site for Justice Minister Michael McDowell's proposed super prison at Thornton Hall. Deputy Ó Snodaigh said, "This surely contravenes Minister McDowell's position on overtime for prison officers."

Speaking today he said, "It was with absolute astonishment that I learned today that prison officers are guarding the site for McDowell's proposed super prison. To have prison officers guarding a site where there is no prison is an absurd development. This surely contravenes Minister McDowell's position on overtime for prison officers.

"If the site actually does need to be secured then the Office of Public Works are responsible for taking care of that and should do so in the normal way by hiring the services of a security firm.

"The Minister needs to explain exactly what is going on and why he is wasting tax-payers money by misusing the services of these prison officers." ENDS
