Crowe Slams Government Record on Child Homelessness

17 January, 2006

Sinn Féin Social and Family Affairs spokesperson Seán Crowe TD has highlighted the Government’s poor record on child poverty after it emerged that provisional figures from the HSE show that 492 children were homeless in the state for the last period that figures were available for.

“These statistics represent a damning indictment and a massive failure on the part of the Government.  For the state to have to admit that in this day and age nearly 500 children are homeless on our streets puts the much vaunted Celtic Tiger in perspective.

“It is clear that a rising tide does not lift all boats and this Government have been indifferent when it comes to the matter of equality and inequality. These latest statistics underline that.

“This Government must prioritise the provision of dedicated children’s accommodation to ensure that at a very minimum no child remains homeless on our streets” ENDS
