Disappointment at Government's failed attempt to close Sellafield

18 January, 2006

Sinn Féin Environment spokesperson Arthur Morgan TD has called on the Irish Government to get serious about the campaign to close down the Sellafield nuclear plant after its case collapsed in a European court today.

Deputy Morgan said, “The Government’s attempt to invoke provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea to compel the British to provide its assessment of the economic and environmental justification for Sellafied was worth pursuing but I believe it was a huge mistake for the Government to base their entire campaign in opposition to Sellafield on this one legal initiative.

“It is very disappointing for Irish people that this case has collapsed before it even got going. The threat from Sellafield and the risks to people’s health and lives remains as high as ever.

“This Government needs to get serious about the campaign to closedown Sellafield. Irish people rightly expect the Government to initiate a significant diplomatic, environmental and political campaign across Europe and beyond to secure the closure of this death plant.” ENDS
