Translink must make most of opportunity to increase public transport numbers

27 January, 2006

Sinn Féin Regional Development spokesperson Raymond McCartney commenting on the publication of the Translink revised timetables, which are due to take effect from Monday 13th February, has urged Translink to ensure that the revised timetable meets the needs of those transport consumers, particularly those using the Larne Line service.

Mr McCartney said:

"Despite the best efforts of Translink to implement its 5 year modernisation programme, it is clear that the number of drivers required to meet the commitments in the revised timetables remains a key priority to be resolved.

"This is against the backdrop of the M1 / Westlink widening scheme where there is a very good opportunity to increase numbers using public transport."

The Sinn Féin Assembly member is acutely aware of the import of the needs of rail users using the Larne line.

"The Departmental budget allocation for the next three years is nowhere near the levels of investment required to overhaul the rail network to meet the needs of 21st Century transport users. This will only make potential disruption a far bigger headache." ENDS
