Farm Fed news a massive blow to Coleraine area

27 January, 2006

Sinn Féin’s Billy Leonard has described the news of closure at Farm Fed Chickens in Coleraine as “the single worst employment blow this area could ever have to take. It is a disaster for all the workers and their families.”

The Councillor added:

“There have been scares before but Farm Fed have always maintained the business and preserved the jobs. We perhaps thought that this would continue but losing more than 300 jobs in an area such as ours is equivalent to thousands in a city context.

The knock on effect for the families and the community is immense and cannot be under estimated.

It is absolutely essential that the relevant authorities set up a task force to help the workers through this situation. Searching for alternative jobs, financial advice, benefits are all issues that government departments and other agencies can help with. The people cannot run from pillar to post to get the necessary information.

There should be a ‘one stop advice centre’ to ease the stress and burdens these families are already suffering.”ENDS
