Sinn Féin back campaign to highlight 'Elder Abuse'
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Older People and Women, Newry Armagh MLA Pat O'Rawe has given Sinn Féin's full support to the camapign to stop Elder Abuse launched at Belfast City Hall today.
Speaking form Belfast City Hall Ms O'Rawe said:
"There is a huge responsibility on all us, particularly those in political life, to stand up and say that enough is enough. Everyday older people in our society an being pushed out into the margins. It is here that they are most vulnerable from violent crime and from physical, emotional and finacial abuse and neglect.
"As a socoiety we should be judged on how we protect and promote the rights of people who may be more vulnerable and marginalised.
"Certainly there is much more that can be done on a stautory basis in terms of services and the proection for older people within particular settings but we also need to do much more to recognise and acknowledge the valuble conribution that older have made and comntinue to make to our communities.
"This is not a problem that exists somewhere else that does not concern us. This is not just a problem in care homes. It is could be happening next door and in our neighbourhoods. It is happening within families. We all need to take responsibility for reaching out and for being aware of the types of signs that may indicate abuse." ENDS
