MacManus pushes for zero VAT on Businesses buying PPE for their workers

Sinn Féin MEP Chris MacManus has written to the EU Commission seeking emergency action to allow businesses to purchase PPE for workers usage at a zero rate of VAT. MacManus today sent a letter with the proposal to EU Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen having won support from MEPs from five of the Parliament’s political groups for the initiative.

MacManus said:

“Today I have stepped up this campaign by sending a letter to Commissioner Von der Leyen that is co-signed by MEPs from five political groups. The letter proposes that the Commission act swiftly to allow Member States to reduce to zero PPE bought by employers in the context of Covid 19.”

The Midlands Northwest MEP said it was a very practical step in the right direction: “Businesses, especially SMEs are struggling and any help that can be provided should be. This is a modest suggestion but a practical one. By backing this proposal, the Commission will free up the hands of countries to reduce or abolish VAT on PPE. Workers and SMEs stand to gain while for Member States the move is revenue neutral.”

“In my letter, I recognised the need for a tight proposal that means only PPE in the context of Covid19 should be eligible.”

“This is a matter of public health, workers’ rights and protecting our SMEs and I hope the Commission will back the proposal, which I am sure then can be rapidly processed and onto the books freeing up Member States to back their businesses while protecting public health.”

MacManus concluded by thanking his fellow MEPs for their support. “I wish to thank the MEPs from five political groups who backed my initiative and hope the Commission reply positively soon.” ENDS

“The intervention must be a meaningful one that sets out clearly the position of the Irish people that Israel is engaged in a genocide against the people of Gaza”
