O'Dowd launches Green Energy Bill
Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd has urged people to get behind his new Green Energy Bill.
The Upper Bann MLA said:
“Sinn Féin’s Green Energy bill, if passed, will place a legal requirement on major electricity suppliers to pay a statutory minimum price for electricity they receive generated in private homes, farms, businesses and community co-ops.
“It will also place an obligation on these providers to ensure that at least 5% of their total electricity supply comes from micro-generation.
“Our planet is in the grip of a climate crisis and we all must play our part to tackle it and that includes energy suppliers.
“Reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and moving towards renewable forms of energy production is vital if we are to avert a global catastrophe.
“In order to ensure that our society's transition away from fossil fuels is a just one, we must not only change how we generate energy, but who generates it.
“Solar panels and small-scale wind turbines allow energy consumers to become energy producers and that is vital to creating renewable energy and reducing the use of fossil fuels.
“I am looking for your views to help shape this bill, please take part in the consultation process please follow the link in this post and help us take another small step towards securing a better tomorrow for future generations.”
