Crowe slams Sports Minister's blocking of Rovers Stadium funding
Sinn Féin TD Seán Crowe has slammed the decision of Sports Minister John O’Donoghue to block public funding for the development of the Shamrock Rovers Stadium site as a multi-sports facility. Minister O’Donoghue is insisting that the stadium be for soccer only but the Sinn Féin TD has described the Minister’s decision as “arrogant” and he insisted the Government should release the money needed “so that the stadium can go ahead without any further, unnecessary delay”.
Deputy Crowe said, “The Sports Minister’s decision is arrogant and goes against the wishes of Tallaght councillors – including Fianna Fáil councillors – who have united in passing a Part 8 planning permission so that this public investment gets value for money for the public by catering for more than one sport and the sporting public.
“This is not the Minister’s money; it is public money. Who is he to tell the people of Tallaght to ‘do it my way – take it or leave it’?”
“FAI consultants may want a stadium just for soccer but the people who live in the Tallaght region want the best deal for everyone, the one that offers the most opportunities to sport, players, fans, families and young people in Tallaght.
“The Minister’s decision is high-handed, short-sighted and just doesn’t make sense. He should get down off his high horse and release the funding so that the stadium can go ahead without any further, unnecessary delay.” ENDS
