Concern that construction workers are being blacklisted for being Trade Union members

12 February, 2006

Sinn Féin TD Sean Crowe this evening said that there were growing concerns among construction workers that people are being blacklisted because they are members of BATU.  He was speaking following the jailing of three building workers who were protesting at a building site in Ballybrack in Dublin.

Deputy Crowe said:

“Over the last number of months there have been growing concerns at the downward spiral in workers rights with some unscrupulous employers trying to increase profits on the back of low pay and the undermining of workers rights and health and safety conditions.

“In some sectors basic rights which were won over many years are being seriously eroded.  And there are growing concerns among construction workers that people are being blacklisted because they are members of BATU.

“It is vital that the government do more to protect workers rights, including the right to be a member of a Trade Union, and to avoid a ‘race to the bottom’ on pay and conditions.”ENDS
