McGurk disappointed at moves to block progressive signage policy

Sinn Féin Councillor Kathleen McGurk has expressed disappointment after parties on Causeway Coast and Glens Council blocked a motion to put in place a progressive bilingual street signage policy.

Cllr McGurk said:

“It’s extremely disappointing that parties on Causeway Coast & Glens Council have blocked a proposal to implement a more progressive street signage policy in the Council area.

“In a council area internationally renowned for the The Giant’s Causeway or as it was known in Irish long before, Clochán an Aifir, and many other tourist areas, it is a shame that councillors voted against progressive signage policy.

“The current bilingual signage policy is outdated and does not reflect this changing community and desire to see bilingual signage erected across the council area.

“This vote comes on the back of Unionist Representatives arrogantly withdrawing from a presentation by Conradh na Gaeilge to mark the beginning of the biggest Irish Language Festival on the island: Seachtain na Gaeilge.

“This is an issue of rights denial given that five Councils across the North that are compliant with European and International Obligations on signage while the remaining six are not.”

“Sinn Féin will be seeking legal advice on this issue over the coming weeks.”

Díomá léirithe ag an Chomhairleoir Nic Oirc faoin chinneadh polasaí forásach comharthaíochta a chosc

Tá díomá léirithe ag Chomhairleoir Shinn Féin Caitlín Nic Oirc i ndiaidh do Chomhairleoirí ar Chomhairle Ceantair Chósta an Chlocháin agus na nGlinnte cosc a chur ar rún polasaí comharthaíochta forásach a rith,

Dúirt an Comh McGurk:

“Is ábhar díomá é gur vótáil páirtithe ar Chomhairle Ceantair Chósta an Chlocháin agus na nGlinnte in éadan polasaí comharthaíochta is forásaí a rith sa Chomhairle Ceantair.’

“Is mór an trua gur vótáil comhairleoirí in éadan an pholasaí i gceantar a bhfuil iomrá air mar áit a tig turasaóirí chuige agus ina bhfuil Clochán an Aifir.”

“Tá an polasaí reatha as dáta agus ní léiriú é ar an phobal agus dúil atá ag daoine comharthaíocht dhátheangach a chur in airde.”

“Tig seo ag leanstan d’Fheisirí Aontachtach ag imeacht den seomra le linn Chonradh na Gaeilge cur i láthair a thabhairt le Seachtain na Gaeilge a cheiliúradh.”

“Is ceist í seo ina bhfuil cearta á séanadh anois. Tá cúig cinn de chomhairlí ó thuaidh ag teacht le Commitmintí Idirnáisiúnta agus Eorpacha agus tá 6 cinn nach bhfuil.”

“Tá Sinn Féin a ghabháil comhairle dlí a lorg.”
