Mitchel Mc Laughlin MLA welcomes T-Mobile announcement of a new flat rate

15 February, 2006

Sinn Féin Economy Spokesperson, Mitchel Mc Laughlin MLA has welcomed T-Mobile UK's announcement of a new flat rate for mobile phone contract customers in the 6-Counties.

Mr Mc Laughlin said:

"I welcome this move by T-Mobile as it will put further pressure on the other service providers to address the unjust burden of inadvertent roaming charges for its customers travelling anywhere on the island of Ireland.

"I have been lobbying governments, regulators and providers for a number of years now to have this unacceptable situation resolved. The announcement today by T-Mobile that it is introducing a flat rate charge for its contract customers follows O2 Ireland's announcement last week that it is abolishing inadvertent roaming charges for its customers. It is obvious that other mobile operators will now come under market pressure to follow suit.

"Although this is good news for some customers the vast majority of customers in the 6-counties will continue to be ripped off by this discriminatory practice, which is no less than a surcharge on the basis of residence.

"Angela Smith and Noel Dempsey must bring immediate pressure on all the other providers to provide all-Ireland tariffs and they must also apply to pre-pay customers who account for the bulk of the windfall profits accrued through this unjust charging system.

"I have written to all of the providers today calling on them to announce a date for the introduction of all-Ireland tariffs." ENDS
