Cork County Council fails to meet obligations under Official Language Act 2003

Sinn Féin Councillor Danielle Twomey has sharply criticized Cork County Council in their failure to meet obligations on Local Authorities, provided for under the 2003 Official Language Act.

The Cork County Development Plan (CDP) was put out for consultation yesterday in English only.

Cllr Twomey said:

“Cork County Council have failed to meet their obligations to the Irish Language with the publication of this document in English only.

“Whilst the plan will be published bilingually when finalized, this consultation document will not be available in Irish.

“It has been reported that the tender for the translation was put out in January to no avail.

“We need to get a position that documents are produced bilingually in tandem as opposed to a last-minute scramble for translation.

“Sinn Féin has been pushing that this consultation document be translated from the start. Irish Speakers, including Muintir na Gaeltachta, in our council area have been discriminated against once again by the county council.

“We will continue to push the Irish Language at a local level and to try and strengthen these obligations with our ongoing work in Leinster House as the Official Languages Bill is amended.”

Cliseann ar Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí a ndualgais faoi Bille na dTeangach Oifigiúla 2003 a chomhlíonadh

Tá Comhairle Contae Chorcaí cáinte go géar ag an Chomhairleoir Shinn Féin Danielle Twomey as siocair nár chomhlíon siad a ndualgais mar Bhardas Áitiúil, faoi Bhille na dTeangacha Oifigiúla 2003.

Cuireadh Plean Forbartha Comhairle Chorcaí amach chuig comhairliúchán poiblí inné i mBéarla amháin.

Dúirt an Comhairleoir Twomey,

‘Chlis ar Chomhairle Contae Chorcaí a ndualgais a chomhlíonadh i leith na Gaeilge leis an cháipéis seo a bheith foilsithe i mBéarla amháin.’

‘Cé go bhfoilseofar an plean go dátheangach, ní bheith teacht ar an cháipéis chomhairliúcháin seo i nGaeilge.’

‘Cuireadh an obair amach ar tairscint i mí Eanáir ach níor thug aon duine freagairt air.’

‘Caithfidh muid gabháil comh fada go scríobhtar na cáipéisí i nGaeilge agus i mBéarla i gcomhair le chéile thar tréaniarracht a dhéanamh ag an nóiméad deireanach.’

‘Tá Sinn Féin á mbrú go n-aistreofaí an cháipéis ó thús. Tá leatrom á dhéanamh ag an Chomhairle Contae ar chainteoirí Gaeilge agus Muintir na Gaeltachta.’

‘Leanfaidh muid á mbrú na Gaeilge go háitiúil agus i dTeach Laighean leis na dualgais seo a neartú leis an leasú ar Bhille na dTeangacha Oifigiúla.’
