The right care at the right time is essential - Flynn
Sinn Féin MLA Órlaithí Flynn has said mental health services must be funded and supported according to need.
The party’s spokesperson for mental health said:
“Once again we hear how access to Mental Health Services is lacking and that lives are being lost as a consequence of this.
“Sadly, a recurrent theme is emerging where many people, including young people continue to be left behind and struggle with multiple issues of mental health problems and substance use.
“We need a dual diagnosis service and enhanced crisis services without further delay.
“For those currently awaiting care through the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS), they will not be shocked to hear about the long waiting lists and the additional anguish that these long waits bring.
“The recent 10-year Mental Health Consultation talked about increasing the CAMHS budget to 10% of the overall Mental Health budget. I believe that is not good enough.
“Mental Health Services must be funded and supported according to need. Getting the right care at the right time is essential.
“I have raised this continuously with the Minister of Health and Department and will do so again at the Health Committee.”
