Concern over future of NEC in Meath

21 February, 2006

Meath County Councillor Joe Reilly said there are growing concerns over the future of NEC semiconductors in Ballivor in South Meath after employees in the plant were called to an emergency this afternoon.

Councillor Reilly said:

"There are growing concerns in Meath this afternoon that NEC semiconductors, who have been employers in Ballivor for 30 years, may be about to close. Workers at the plant were in touch with my office this morning after staff were asked to attend an emergency meeting at 4pm where management are due to outline plans for the future of the company.

"NEC have been good employers in Ballivor for almost 30 years and there are many extended families working at the plant. It would be a major blow to the local economy if the factory were to shut." ENDS
